Second LP by the great Oliver de Coque at this page is this one.
The title is more or less the same but this one is from 1977.
First side contains two tracks although they appear to be one. I
didn't try to devide them, chanceless if I would.

It's been 4 days since I found the time for some posts.
Been busy doing other things, but today we're back with
something we didn't see yet at the GG. Some time ago, one
of our loyal visitors, who lives in Paris asked me if I had
music from Haiti. At the time I was not familiar with it, so
I decided to dive into the matter. Compas is the name of this
style and it's a happy sound. "The overall sound is sweet and
smooth and the melodies are carried on flowing guitar lines,
regulated by a characteristic rocking beat that pivots between
the hi-hat and a bass drum on the floor."(Rough Guide)
I found this album on that fair last week. This weekend
I had to visit Paris for other matters and searched a little
for records too. I brought home some old LP's by groups like
Shleu-Shleu and Coupé Cloué. You can expect some of those later.

To continue the Tchico Tchicaya story, here's the second one
with this Victory-picture of Tchico. On the record-fair of this
weekend I found even a fourth. Thumbs up again 'cause it's

From Nigeria 1977 comes this album by Oliver de Coque.
The Rough Guide on World Music calls him a classic Highlifer.
I quote; "..the colourful de Coque occupies a unique position
in the highlife pantheon, syncretising classic Congo guitar
into laidback highlife rhythms."

Hello Global Groovers around the world, today I am very exited.
I've been waiting and searching long time to find this LP,
and finally I did. Nelson Cavaquinho is one of my all time
Samba heroes. When I first heard these songs I was thrilled
with my new done discovery. Do you know that feeling ? It changed
my perception of Samba completely. His way of playing guitar with
those firm strokes, combined with his fragile voice that blasts of
experience. His lyrics are of such beauty, this is pure poetry.
( you'd have to understand Portugese ofcourse, sorry for those
who don't ). A song like 'A flor e o espinho' still gives me
goosebumps. It touches me right in the heart.
Even if you're not into Samba, LISTEN TO THIS LP !
This is the Blues from Brasil, Muito, mas Muito bom mesmo !

After another six months, it was finally time. Time for the Mega
Records and CD Fair in Utrecht. The one in april is okay, but the
one in november, wow, everybody took their best load of
merchandise and came over. Specially some French dealers brought
along rare stuff. Like this guy from *** Records in Le Havre.
He showed me this;
Ouza's music had a political load and was kind of radical.
He studied and was teacher and musician at the same time,
therefore he did not record many albums. I guess we are lucky
I found this one. It is a true beauty and I want to thank that
French dealer for bringing it to us.

Here's another album by Pamelo Mounk'a, he used to be a singer with
Les Bantous de la Capitale. With two guitar greats, Master Mwana
Congo and Pablo Lubadika Porthos. Who knows the exact year on this
one ? Can you tell us ?

After his huge succes in 1976 with 'Sweet Mother', Prince Nico
Mbarga had become indestructible throughout most West African
countrys. I found this LP together with two others, also from '81.
Family Movement and Lucky Marriage, I'll post those later.

The Ethiopians started out as a vocal duo, Leonard Dillon and
Stepen Taylor, who cut a number of hits for Studio One in the 60's.
Taylor died unfortunate in a car accident in 1975. This is Leonard
Dillon's return with sir Cocksone Dodd at Studio One, a sweet album.
Always LOVED it and I still do.

This is maybe Tappa's best LP, when it came out, we went
totally nuts. I remember Tapper playing at Paradiso Amsterdam,
they tore down the place, we had a great night.

From Mali here's Zani Diabate, our collegue at Worldservice
already gave us some older music of the group, on November 5.
This one is from 1988, on Mango, a division of Island Records.
I quote the backsleeve; "The Super Djata Band draw upon
traditional Malian culture for inspiration: Rhythms and dances
of Bambara hunters and Bozo fishermen, together with the melodies
of the Peul and Malinka, spiced with Zani's almost
psychedelic guitar."

Jamaican rhythm twin, Sly and Robbie, were really well ahead
of their time, early eighties. If you listen to this here LP,
that's been recorded some 25 years ago, it still sounds modern.
With the friendly voice of Ini Kamoze, this album is great from
beginning to end. Ini Kamoze ( pronounced Iné Ká-mo-zé ) writes
and arranges all his own music, and aimed to shake up earth
with it. As far as I'm concerned he succeeded.

Orguesta Aragon started out in 1939 in Cienfuegos, Cuba. They were
not the inventors but the main performers of the Cha Cha Chá.
This is the type of band that keeps existing through the years.
One member leaves the band, another comes in. Their career now
runs for about 7 decades. They still perform today. The quality
of this LP is not very well, but still worth a listen. read_more

One of the original members of the Zaiko Langa Langa family
was vocalist Bimi Ombale. He made this album with Carlyto,
Roxy and Nzaya Nzayadio. I do not know a year on this one,
if any one can fill us in here ?

Can't seem to find a lot of info about Lita Branda, except
for the fact that she is from Peru.
The son she brings, produced by Roberto Torres is something
you can't deny. The great cover artwork is ofcourse by

Miriam Makeba 1932 - 2008 , R I P

Last night, 76 years old, Miriam Makeba died after getting
unwell on stage, she was still performing.
I would like to pay my respect to Africa's most famous
female singer of all time with this LP.

I was in the mood for some Juju tonight so I decided to rip us
this sweet album by Chief Ebenezer Obey. Being an English release,
I have the feeling it is adapted to European standards a bit, the
songs are shorter and have pauses in between. Still, nothing can go
wrong, Juju is simply sweet. I find it irresistible.

Orchestre Zaiko Langa Langa was founded by Kinshasa students
in 1969. The name was constructed from 'Zaire ya Bakoko',
( Zaire of our ancestors ), Langa Langa is the name of the
people in the Equator region. The group grew fast and existed
of some 20 persons that kept changing along the way. A few names,
Papa Wemba, Evoloko Jocker, Nyoka Longo and Bozi Boziana were
some of the early members of the group. They blended Rumba with
Rock in the 70's of which this LP is a fine example.

Let's start this saturday with some reggae music.
One of Jamaica's greater singers is without doubt Michael Prophet.
I think he's been underestimated widely. Ever since I bought
this old record in 1983, I had a weakness for his singing.
Backed by the 'Hi Times Band', this is a splendid reggae album.
I used to play these songs a lot back in the 80's when I had
my weekly reggaenight in a local youthcenter in my town.

Before I found this album by Mayaula Mayoni, I had never heard of
him. When searching on the internet I can't seem to find much
more then a discography. I also found out he used to sing with
Franco at a certain point. Youtube has a few films. What I do know
is that I liked this LP from the first time I heard it.
Sung with 'Malage de Lugendo' this is great Congolese music.

It's been a while since we had an album by one of Africa's
finest female singers, M'Bilia Bel. Although it's got a few
scratches, it's still worth a spin. Like on most occasions
M'Bilia is accompanied by Seigneur Tabu Ley Rochereau and
l'Orchestre Afrisa International. What a woman, what a voice.

On Laslos Records here's an album by Miguel Quintana, we
have seen him doing background vocals on multiple occasion,
now this is one of his own records. The line-up on this LP is
almost the same as on Melcochita's album I posted last week.
Melcochita is doing the Chorus here with José Mangual Jr..

Another Rochereau, this one is from 1973 and that shows.
It seems Tabu Ley is the inventor of the Afro-hairdo, no serieus
he was kind of hip those days, that shirt too. He even recorded
his version of 'Let it be' ( Beatles ), not for me that is.
Although it's quite different from the original and sung in his
own language, I prefer Rochereau's own songs.
Part from that this is a great album, check it out yourself.
